Example text

Giles in the Fields concerned the musician: Henry-Thomas, son of John Eccles, gentleman, and his wife Ann, was baptized on 2 September 1702; their daughter Bridget was baptized on 29 August 1703; and their daughter Eleanor was baptized on 30 December 1705. The daughters Ann and Mary, named in Eccles's will, have not been traced. John Eccles's reputation rests not on his performing, of which we know almost nothing, but on his work as one of the most facile and melodic composers of his day. Many of his songs were individually printed, as the Catalogue of Printed Music in the British Museum attests.

When young he possessed a clear, strong counter tenor voice, with some sweetness, but his pipe has of late been fumigated too much with tobacco and ale. He is now with the Worcester company, where he has been some years. His wife was a Miss Emerton {sic}, whom he married in Ireland. She is a good speaker, and has merit in many parts, but is too fond of the young and tender line, not recollecting it is impossible to pass for a girl at her age. Edwards, John [fl. 17771794], musician. John Edwards of No 62, Old Bailey, became a freeman in the Worshipfull Company of Musicians on 12 September 1777.

The name of the actress was revealed in Democratic Rage on 12 June. Edgerton. See also EGERTON. Edgerton, Miss [fl. ], actress. The London Stage lists a Miss Edgerton as acting at Drury Lane in 174445, though no roles are recorded for her. Possibly she was the Miss Egerton who belonged to Price's company in Ireland and was drowned crossing the Boyne in the spring of 1772. Edleston, Mr d. c. 1778, doorkeeper. A doorkeeper at Drury Lane Theatre, Mr Edleston shared a benefit with three other employees on 22 May 1776, but the house was small, and he lost £18 4s.
