June Uncle Kit inherits the Crackanthorpe estate at Newbiggin; (a few weeks later he legally adopts the surname of 'Crackanthorpe'). July Beaupuy leaves Blois to defend his country against the Austrians on the Rhine. 3 September Writing to RW from Blois, W refers to his return and to staying in London a few weeks to attend to his 'publication' (L1, 81). He awaits a remittance of £20. (Late in life he said he was in 14 A Wordsworth Chronology Orleans during the Paris massacres of 2--6 September.
Basil will have to remain in England; solitude has made him selfish, and he will be better with children of his own age. 25 The Ws leave Alfoxden for Bristol, staying first with the Coleridges. September 3 (Thurs) Writing to Jane Pollard, who has recently married Mr Marshall, a Leeds linen-manufacturer, D, who seems to have been staying with the Rawsons of Halifax since she left Sockbum (probably early in May), is excited at the prospect of joining W at Racedown. a. for the maintenance of little Basil Montagu, possibly another child, and W' s expectation of having Mr Pinney's son as a pupil, everything seems promising. She is to join W at 1795 21 Bristol, where she is invited to stay with the Pinneys, before proceeding with Basil to Racedown.
