We will discuss research on the prevalence of multimorbidity and factors associated with this. Subsequent chapters consider how multimorbidity has an impact on patients, the relationship between physical and mental health problems and how managing multiple health problems concurrently can create a heavy burden of treatment for patients.

For developing countries, the prevalence of multimorbidity may also be expected to rise further, as the life expectancy continues to increase chronic diseases become more frequent. Multimorbidity has many consequences and it is related to greater use of healthcare services. The high prevalence of multimorbidity thus results in more frequent consultations; in general practice, most consultations – up to as much as 80% – concern patients with multimorbidity.
