Atmospherics’ were to be his hallmark and that in many ways was what George had been all about. The term ‘Gothic’ was to be applied to Trespass as with much else of his work and in George we witness the impressionable child responding to the gothic in the Bible and its related stories, in comics and in popular culture generally. That child was later in life to be especially associated with the works of Charles Dickens. In George we are shown why that was to be the case. It is a book that evokes a thoroughly Dickensian world.

Although he was, in Philip Hope-Wallace’s broadcast words, ‘a master of the shameless cliché’ and, according to the Observer’s Ivor Brown, able to offer ‘tosh with a straight face and fixity of purpose’, he was all the while giving audiences good theatre. His charm was always of the essence, his basic and undisputed niceness always came across and as a showman he was never less than professional. The Times pointed out that his strength as a writer was his ‘genuine sense of “those colours that show best by candlelight”’.

In contrast to his Dickens act, he did not attempt to act out the part but rather just stepped forward as himself to perform Dylan and especially 42 EMLYN WILLIAMS his prose writings. They had a few things in common: Dylan’s voice was posher but they both relied on an exaggerated and fanciful declaiming to achieve effect. They had also both been impressionable youngsters who had never lost a fascination with the sounds, shadows, follies and foibles that surround an infant in an adult world. It was Emlyn Williams’s good fortune that as a young man he had discovered that the theatre was a world in which he could indulge in the sensations that had always thrilled him as a child.
