Hallam’s wife, Hattie Shepparde, who had played Juno so delectably in the Australasian premiere of Orphée aux enfers, traveled as stage manager for the first part of the tour, until advancing pregnancy forced her to return to Melbourne. Allen’s commonsense approach to touring was reflected in the repertoire he chose. It was weighted toward the lighter end of the spectrum and included a majority of works that had already proved their popularity in New Zealand. The Daughter of the Regiment, Der Freischütz, Fra Diavolo, Martha, La Sonnambula, Faust, Il Trovatore, and the Lacy version of Cinderella had all been introduced by Lyster a decade earlier.
Many people, particularly 42 ADRIENNE SIMPSON the young, were seeing opera for the first time and were thoroughly enjoying the experience. The welcome the company received in Oamaru, Wanganui, and Napier underlined the other remarkable aspect of the tour: its success. Apart from modest patronage in Nelson, which was perhaps the most conservative settlement in the colony, and at the start of the first Dunedin season, when the ensemble was still shaking down, Allen’s Royal English Opera Company traveled New Zealand on a rising tide of public appreciation.
How much influence Allen had on Lyster’s decision is unknown, but it seems more than likely that he had been grooming his protégée with just such an opportunity in mind. Alice May made her stage debut on Monday, May 1, 1871, during the last week of the English company’s Melbourne season. The role selected for her was that of Marie, the Daughter of the Regiment in Donizetti’s sparkling opera La Fille du Régiment, about a foundling raised by a troupe of soldiers. It was not the easiest choice for a novice.
